Goldman Sachs partner fired over WhatsApps in 2023 finally resurfaces

Hari Moorthy had a good thing going at Goldman Sachs. He was a partner in New York, a tech fellow and head of the bank's transaction banking unit, TxB, thought to be one of its priority areas at the time. Then, he was unceremoniously cut by the bank for communicating with other TxB leaders on unauthorized channels. Moorthy left Goldman in late 2023, now he's finally back... but not in New York.

Moorthy has joined FS Investments, a Philadelphia based alternative asset manager, as its chief technology officer. He appears to be replacing Vincent Amatuli, who spent the last six years as FS Investments' chief technology and operations officer but departed in January according to his social media. Amatuli was also a Goldman Sachs alum, spending 14 years at the bank and latterly serving as CTO of its financial planning subsidiary, Ayco. Lisa Opoku, another ex-Goldman Partner and head of its partner family office, was also hired as the firm's COO a year ago.

FS Investments is ramping up its technology operations. In November, the Philadelphia Business Journal reported that the firm is building two new offices in Dubai and Bengaluru, the latter of which will be a data and engineering hub set to house up to 60 employees. As of November, the firm had more than 500 total employees.

Bringing in someone that managed one of Goldman's most modern tech stacks is a coup for FS Investments, assuming they're not too strict on where he messages coworkers. However, Goldman insiders have previously said that the TxB team placed much more emphasis on sales than the technology itself; technologists also previously complained about the team's work-life balance.

Moorthy will likely carry over his leadership style to his role at FS Investments, which includes "vital" weekly meditation sessions. He previously told American Banker that "the point of it all is to be able to listen to others, and to do that, you have to be able to listen to yourself."
