Morgan Stanley’s newest chemicals MD comes courtesy of Goldman
Investment banking bonuses for American banks were announced last month. They’ve been paid by now, and the bankers who’ve had new jobs lined up (possibly even from last year) have started finishing off their garden leave.

Sean Murray joined Morgan Stanley in New York yesterday. A chemicals managing director (MD), he joined from Goldman Sachs, where he spent three years. He was BMO Capital Market’s head of chemicals banking before joining Goldman in 2021, part of a wave of mid-market and boutique bankers hired by the firm that year.
Moving to Morgan Stanley isn’t a hard sell for MDs. Although the bank’s bonus pool wasn’t great generally, it was generous with it MDs – some saw bonus increases of up to 40%, although most were in the high teens. Goldman’s people also complained about bonuses (there’s definitely a pattern in the industry), with CEO David Solomon and COO John Waldron’s $80m pay packages being a considerable source of ire in combination with that.
