Hedge fund Schonfeld shows which hedge fund jobs are proliferating. It's bus dev

Schonfeld, the hedge fund, has filed some UK accounts for Schonfeld Strategic Advisors LLP and if you're interested in knowing who they've been hiring at a high level, you will be fulfilled.

Unlike other hedge funds with UK accounts, Schonfeld helpfully breaks down its headcount by function. Since 2022, it has increased its London headcount by 71 people. But some functions have benefitted from proportionately more hiring than others.

As the chart below shows, the function that's grown most during this period is business development, which is the exalted hedge fund term for recruiters who hire portfolio managers. Business development professionals are not just recruiters, though. As the head of bus dev at Point72 observed recently, they also see themselves as doing an investing role. It's just that they're investing in portfolio managers, who then invest for the fund.

At the end of 2025, Schonfeld had 20 people working in bus dev in London, up from only six in 2022. This year, it's lost at least one of them - Sameer Buch - to Millennium.

Schonfeld's London bus devs have then been accumulating London portfolio managers. A net nine PMs were added last year. 25 have been added since 2022. By comparison, trading, risk and standard HR roles have dwindled.

Despite Schonfeld's portfolio manager hiring in 2025, the FCA Register suggests that five investment professionals left in September (Rastko Miletic, Joseph Bond, both PMs, and Andrew Prentice, Peter Hunt and Sourabh Tripathi). Their departures are thought to follow Manus Baveja's exit to Dymon in August.
