Discover your dream Career
For Recruiters

"Hedge fund jobs are a nightmare. Know this before you leave your job in a bank"

I've spent the past five years on the buy-side after leaving a bulge-bracket bank in Singapore. Five years ago, hedge funds were hiring aggressively. They couldn't match bank bases or guarantees, but they dangled accelerated pay out percentages that looked irresistible. I took the leap, and I've learned the hard truths most bank traders underestimate.

Everyone knows hedge-fund trading isn't the same as bank trading, even if you're effectively running prop risk in your seat. But most people dramatically overestimate their own edge and underestimate how brutal the transition will be.

I've performed reasonably since joining; but when I look at what I actually earned versus what I would have earned staying in banking, the difference isn't meaningful. And once I adjust for stress, lifestyle, and the toll on my health, the trade-off looks even worse.

The biggest reality check is the life-to-date P&L problem. In a bank, a bad year resets in January. If the loss isn't career-ending, and you've built goodwill, you start clean. In a hedge fund, your loss never disappears. You dig out from the hole, then you hit the next year's target, then you get paid. Watching that negative number follow you month after month is psychologically crushing in a way most bank traders simply don't appreciate.

For the record, I've done fine; just nowhere near the upside I once imagined, even with the initial accelerated payout structure. Many colleagues who made the same jump have already left the industry altogether. The majority never reached the vision they had in their heads

If you're a bank trader fantasizing about the hedge-fund world, understand this: the grass isn't greener. The pressure is higher, the economics are not as attractive as they look on paper, and the reset button doesn't exist.

Go in with eyes wide open; or don't go in at all.
