The problem with financial sponsors bankers: "They're like a concierge who makes the coffees"

Financial sponsors bankers are hot. As we reported last month, there has been quite a bit of financial sponsors hiring, culminating in the surprise extraction of Klaus Hessberger from Lazard for a surprise job at Citi. Simultaneously, warm words are still being spoken by senior banking executives about the potential for financial sponsors deals to make a comeback, soon.

Financial sponsors bankers interface with private capital firms. When a private equity firm, private credit firm or infrastructure firm wants to do a deal, financial sponsors are there to ensure the bank that employs them is engaged and that all runs smoothly.  "It's as close to pure relationship banking as you get in modern investment banking," observes one headhunter.

This has its advantages, but also its downsides.

Financial sponsors bankers are jacks of all trades. While healthcare bankers specialise in healthcare and industrials bankers specialise in industrials, financial sponsors bankers specialise in working with financial sponsors. But financial sponsors are private capital firms. And private capital firms invest across healthcare, industrials are beyond. This means that financial sponsors bankers must know a bit about everything. They must also work very closely with the specialist sector bankers who know the specifics.

"Banks use very strong sector bankers to cover the individual deal partners at sponsor firms," one senior sponsors banker explains. "But they also need financial sponsors specialist bankers to pull the whole thing together. The sponsors banker speaks to the head of the fund."

In this sense, financial sponsors are the introduction, not the main act. They open doors for their sector-specialist colleagues. "The caricature of the sponsor coverage banker is that they are a concierge," says the headhunter. "They arrange meetings and make coffee but they don't bring any content."

Financial sponsors bankers would, naturally, disagree with this characterisation. "You need sponsors bankers to cover the partners and the founders at a fund," says one. "It's a very senior role."

It can also be a role that sponsors bankers themselves admit feels precarious. Sector focused bankers compete to claim responsibility for deals, particularly in a challenging market. Sponsors bankers must bring the deals in, but hands a lot over to sector colleagues. "A good sponsors banker cultivates very high level relationships, knows what the sponsor is thinking and doesn't get in the way of the coverage bankers when the client wants content. They ensure the quality of advice is top class," says the headhunter. "A bad sponsors banker just gets in the way."

The nature of sponsors banking is such that the people doing it are almost always managing directors. This can make practitioners of the art hard to find. "There just aren't that many senior and effective sponsors bankers available," says one. "Many of us have retired, left the industry, or gone to direct lending and private equity firms."

With at least six senior financial sponsors bankers moving in the past year, insiders say the merry-go-round is still turning. Lazard now needs someone to replace Hessberger. Citi's team may end up overweight when Hessberger arrives. Boutiques like Evercore have been growing in the space. "People are going for a premium," observes one banker in the space.

The only rain coming to the parade may be the ongoing lack of deals. The private capital industry is not what it was. Senior bankers have been calling the return of financial sponsors deals for the past few years. Will 2026 be the year it finally happens? "No," says one senior banker. "There's an inevitability that the floodgates will open one day, but I see no sign of that happening so far."
