Making MD at Citi in 2025 vs. making MD at Goldman Sachs
Citi has promoted some managing directors (MD). The full list of names is below. As has been widely noted, the list is very short compared to the recent past. Last year, Citi promoted 344 people. This year it only promoted 276. However, before Jane Fraser became CEO of Citi in 2021, circa 220 new MDs a year were the norm, so the small 2025 MD class may be a reversion to type.

The dispersion of Citi's 2025 MDs by division this year versus last year is shown in the chart below. This was a particularly bad year for technology and for risk promotions, possibly reflecting Citi's enthusiasm for rolling out agentic AI and automating jobs in the middle office.
Citi's MD promotions follow Goldman Sachs' MD promotions last month. Goldman Sachs names new MDs biannually and promoted 638 people. Given this, and that Goldman has 48,300 employees and Citi has 227,000, making MD at Goldman looks 5x more likely based on the total population of each bank. However, this doesn't consider MD-eligible director populations.
It also appears to take longer to make MD at Citi. And Citi is more likely to promote MDs it's hired externally. Insiders suggest this is causing some grumbling in the ranks.
