Another Nomura rates MD leaves, this time for hedge fund Balyasny

There's been a lot of movement from rates traders in 2024. The most notable trader to move in November was Nomura's EMEA head of rates options Ali Khan, who left in late November, allegedly for a multi-strategy hedge fund. If it's Balyasny he's heading for, he might run into an old colleague.

Olek Gajowniczek joined the hedge fund last month as a rates portfolio manager in London. He spent just shy of ten years at the Japanese bank, also in London, where he was an MD and deputy head of European flow rates trading. Gajowniczek also spent six and a half years as a rates trader at Morgan Stanley

The mass-shuffle of rates traders in 2024 is in preparation for an expectedly more lucrative 2025. Nomura did some hiring of its own earlier in the year, including EMEA rates flow trading head Hemish Shah, who joined from Deutsche Bank in March.

Towards the new year, however, there seem to be more outs than ins. Richard Volpe, global head of rates trading in Nomura's securities division, left in mid-November. Raymond Betita spent just over a year in the bank's dollar rates trading team after joining from BNP Paribas, before joining HFT firm DRW in October.
