All the jobs in hedge funds and how to get them

If you want to work in a hedge fund, you might want to be a portfolio manager on the sort of pay that hedge funds are known for. However, this is very far from being your only option.

Florida-based hedge fund search firm The Kronor Group has analysed its Florida-based data on the jobs that hedge funds hire for, and the kinds of people who fill them.

It found that portfolio managers (PMs) are a (predictably) tiny proportion of the total and that in areas like quantitative research and engineering, a significant proportion of people are hired straight from university.

The chart below shows Kronor's analysis of new hire data between 2023 and 2025. 50% of hiring was for investment roles, but within that group a far higher proportion was for analysts, quants and engineers than for PMs.

Hedge fund hiring by background

The chart below shows the background of hires, by role, between 2023 and 2025.

If you're looking for a graduate job in a hedge fund, the chart suggests your best bet is to go in as a quant or software engineer. However, a significant proportion (17%) of analysts P&L support staff are also joining from education.

Interestingly, very few portfolio managers come directly from banks. Almost all have been working on the buy-side already.
