A variety of opportunities in Hong Kong

The economic growth story now appears to be solidly back on track in Hong Kong, as GDP growth has accelerated in the third quarter to 3.8% annualised.  Financial markets continue to be among the best performing in the world for the year to date; after some difficult years, the cycle seems to have definitively turned.

With the return to growth, the job market has also picked up, as local and global firms staff up for new business.  This brings the SAR back into focus for global talent; over the coming years, Hong Kong is likely to provide even more opportunities for international professionals willing to relocate and participate in this story.  And this is a story which might begin with the Global Online Career Fair organised by Hong Kong Talent Engage.

It is a story covering an increasing number of industries and professions.  Hong Kong’s business landscape reflects both its background as a global centre for finance, shipping, aviation and trade, and its development as a regional and international hub for legal and arbitration services, IP trading, technology and the cultural industries.  It bridges the world, with a common law legal system and English-speaking business community in direct proximity to the powerhouse economy of China.

As well as the nexus of industrial and skill clusters surrounding Hong Kong’s historical role as a centre for trade and its financing, the diversity fostered by its unique position now support a vibrant culture, with new opportunities in media and content creation.

For legal services professionals, Hong Kong’s legal system and connection to the Chinese economy has made it the premier centre for international law and dispute resolution in the Asia-Pacific region.  There are over 11,000 solicitors, 1700 barristers and 1500 registered foreign lawyers in the city , plus a thriving alternative dispute resolution industry centred on the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, which settled 503 cases totalling HK$9bn last year.

And Hong Kong remains one of the world’s top financial centres.  A total of 66 companies raised US$23.27 billion on the main board of the Hong Kong stock exchange during the first nine months of 2025, more than triple the previous year.  Global banks as well as local, regional and Chinese players have all been hiring strongly to keep pace with the growth of business.

Attracting and developing talent

The Institute for Management Development’s 2025 World Talent Rankings rate Hong Kong as the top talent market in Asia and the fourth worldwide.  This reflects the central importance of human capital to the SAR government’s development strategy. Few other governments in the world give such a prominent place in their economic policy to the promotion, attraction and development of talent.

Hong Kong Talent Engage is the government body tasked with creating links between the domestic market and global talent, providing a single central point of contact since it was set up in 2023. As well as special schemes covering the main industries on the Talent List of Hong Kong , graduates of a list of global elite universities can be given special consideration for the qualities and skills they can bring to the city, where these can be matched to opportunities available.

One of the most important ways in which HKTE has reached out to overseas candidates over the last few years has been by organising its Global Online Career Fairs. These events allow an experience similar to a physical hiring fair, with virtual “booths” at which some of the city’s biggest employers can make initial connections, allowing jobseekers to gather information and research potential opportunities without needing to travel or to wait for an overseas event to reach a centre near them.

The next such event will be held from the 10th to the 20th of November, with live chat sessions with recruiters available on the 19th and 20th.  Some of the world’s largest and best firms will be present, including DBS, Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, Forvis Mazars, AtkinsRéalis, Fujifilm, Odoo, ThirdBridge, WestK, Rosewood Hong Kong, Shangri-La Group, as well as global professional services companies like PwC, EY and the largest financial firms – 70 of the world’s top 100 banks have their regional headquarters in Hong Kong, including 15 globally systemically important institutions.

The advantages of relocating to Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s unique location and business environment has always made it a place to go in order to fast-track a career.  There are more opportunities to gain experience than anywhere else in Asia. As well as forming an important chapter in the promotion story of many of the world’s top executives, the concentration of top firms allows high-flying candidates to try new paths and discover their potential.  In order to promote and consolidate this key advantage of the Hong Kong labour market, HKTE’s services do not stop at the visa approval stage.  HKTE continues to provide help to global talent, including career coaching and networking events.

As well as providing opportunities for career advancement, however, many high-calibre global individuals choose to spend time in Hong Kong as a learning and lifestyle experience.  The mix of global cultures in a modern urban environment is practically unique in the world, with food, culture and recreational opportunities that are unmatched. Hong Kong is also a clean and safe place to live, with world class transport systems and housing.  HKTE is able to help relocating professionals to build a community and to advise on international education opportunities for family life.

Companies from all over the world are increasing their investment in Hong Kong, and candidates have all been re-evaluating the opportunities available there.  It is a great time to take the first step and register for the November Global Online Career Fair and find out more.
