Standard Chartered in Singapore has hired Maik Lutze as its global head of design and user experience for corporate, commercial and institutional banking (CCIB).
Lutze previously spent just under two years as Citi’s Singapore-based head of design for APAC and EMEA, according to his LinkedIn profile. He led a 30-strong design team that reinvented Citi’s “digital customer experience” across 17 markets, including creating a “standardised and scalable design system” for phones, tablets, desktops and foldables.
Prior to that, Lutze was the experience design lead at Citi's global fintech and experience design department. He joined the team in August 2015 as its first member and focused on supporting the bank’s cultural transformation via “design thinking and the installation of agile processes”. His achievements include reimagining a customer-centric mobile app and creating a new design language, according to his website.
Lutze cut his design teeth in German advertising agencies between 1998 and 2008, working in various creative roles in the city of Hamburg. He moved to Beijing in 2008 and spent about five and a half years at Interone China, part of the BBDO agency network, latterly as executive creative director. Lutze held a similar role at Proximity and BBDO Singapore before he moved in-house and joined Citi.
On his website Lutze describes himself as a “designer and user experience [UX] lead with unapologetic German genes”. Banks in Singapore have increased their hiring of UX professionals this year to help them build the new (or enhanced) customer-facing platforms that they have been launching as people and businesses perform more online transactions during the pandemic. Firms including Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan have also been hiring globally for their design teams.
If you want to work for Lutze at Standard Chartered, you might want to come across as detailed orientated during the interview. “Most everyone knows that we Germans are obsessed with detail, quality and refinement,” Lutze writes on his website. “We relentlessly drill into most any subject to try and see if we can improve upon it.”
Current design team members might expect Lutze to change aspects of the way Stan Chart approaches its UX. “The work I’m most proud of, however, is company-wide cultural change. I've come to realize that I'm a natural catalyst for this. Turning people into believers and collaborators is what gives me energy and gets me up in the morning,” he says.
