Amazon, Facebook and Grab kick-start 2021 intern hiring in Singapore

If you’re a student in Singapore looking to gain work experience at a large tech firm next year, the bad news is that deadlines for Google and Microsoft internships have already expired. You can, however, still apply to Amazon, Facebook and Grab.

Grab, the most prolific local recruiter of these three firms, is currently offering January-to June internships across 10 teams, including engineering, information technology, data analytics and data science, and product and design. The company’s careers site suggests that within each team there are multiple intern roles focused on different Grab products. For example, engineering interns could be assigned to work on its GrabCar, GrabFood, GrabAds, Grab for Business, GrabFinancial, or GrabVentures platforms.

Regardless of the product, engineering interns need a “working knowledge” in programming tools such as Go, Java, Javascript, Kotlin, Python, Node.js, SQL, C++, iOS development framework, and Android development framework. A “strong ability to structure data and write algorithms” is also a must. Be quick if you want to join Grab as an intern in the first half as applications close on 18 November. Facebook and Amazon have not published their deadlines.

Facebook has three positions on offer, all of which are technology focused and run for 12 weeks over the summer. As an enterprise engineer, for example, you’ll be creating “enterprise software applications using PHP” and implementing “web interfaces using XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript”. The role requires finding “end-to-end engineering solutions to complex business problems”.

The technical program manager intern at Facebook will work on cross-functional infrastructure projects in areas such as backbone/subsea networks, data centres, and point of presence (POP) networks. You’ll need to be pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s in computer science, electrical or mechanical engineering, or a related technical discipline to apply.

As we’ve already reported, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has two positions in its elite Tech U Associate programme, which provides a year of intensive training to prepare tech graduates for full-time jobs. It’s also now opened up 11 other intern jobs for penultimate year students in Singapore, most of which either run from January to June, or from July to December. Its program manager intern, for example, will be tasked with developing “Excel-based tools and analytical models to support business decision making”.

AWS also has two Singapore-based roles within its Next Gen internship, which is focused on leadership, business and presentation skills. Interns “independently own” a business project and also work to support their assigned teams. At the end of the internship, they present their “project learnings and proposal to a panel of key business leaders”.

While there are scores of big-tech internships still available in Singapore, a tech recruiter says the vacancy numbers aren’t large compared with the pool of local students who will be applying. Each firm will received “hundreds of applications” for every intern job they advertise, he adds.
