Can Clydesdale’s Scottish staff escape the bank’s redundancy plans unscathed?

At first glance, it looks good if you’re working for Clydesdale in Scotland. The bank’s owner, National Australia Bank, has announced a redundancy programme which appears to be focused on southern England.

NAB is cutting 1,400 jobs in the UK by 2015. 29 out of 73 of the bank’s Financial Solutions Centres in Southern England are being closed, most of which dealt with commercial property lending. From now on, Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank (also owned by NAB) will focus their attention on consumer and small business lending in Scotland and the north.

This is good news given there has been talk of NAB pulling out of the UK entirely – thereby placing all jobs at Clydesdale at risk of disappearance. Ominously, however, Clydesdale is also closing six back office operations, the location of which has yet to be specified.

A quick look at Clydesdale’s website reveals it’s not currently hiring in Scotland, but has 8 vacancies in Leeds alone.

Update: It's been confirmed that jobs will indeed go in Scotland. The Daily Record reported that 60 jobs are being cut and that two of Clydesdale's Glasgow operations centres are closing.
