Our client is seeking an experienced Network Security Engineer to support a critical infrastructure and security project within a complex enterprise environment. This is an initial 4-6 week day-rate contract opportunity based in Melbourne, offering the potential for additional project work beyond the initial engagement. Due to the nature of the work, this position requires full-time onsite attendance, and applications will only be considered from candidates currently based in Melbourne.
This opportunity would suit a hands-on contractor who enjoys being brought in to solve problems, improve security posture and deliver outcomes in fast-moving technical environments.

Your new roleJoining a focused project team, you'll provide expertise across firewall engineering, network security and infrastructure remediation activities. A significant portion of the engagement will centre around reviewing, optimising and modernising existing firewall environments while supporting broader network and infrastructure initiatives. You'll work across both Palo Alto and Fortinet technologies, helping ensure secure, reliable and resilient network operations.
Key responsibilities will include:

• Deploying, configuring and supporting Palo Alto firewalls
• Managing security policies, NAT, routing and VPN configurations
• Performing PAN-OS upgrades and platform maintenance
• Designing and implementing High Availability (HA) configurations
• Reviewing, optimising and rationalising firewall rule sets
• Reconfiguring and supporting FortiGate firewall environments
• Supporting interoperability and migration activities across firewall platforms
• Assisting with broader network engineering activities including routing, VLANs and infrastructure security controls
• Contributing to technical documentation and project delivery outcomes

What you'll need to succeedWe're looking for someone with strong practical experience in network security and firewall engineering who can quickly add value within a project environment.
Essential experience

• Strong Palo Alto firewall administration and deployment experience
• Advanced firewall configuration, including security policies, NAT, routing and VPN technologies
• PAN-OS upgrade and lifecycle management experience
• High Availability (HA) configuration and redundancy design
• Firewall rule review, optimisation and security hardening
• FortiGate administration and configuration experience
• Experience working across mixed Palo Alto and Fortinet environments
• Strong TCP/IP networking fundamentals
• Experience with VLANs and routing technologies
• Active Directory and Group Policy administration

Highly regarded

• Hyper-V deployment and virtual machine provisioning
• Linux server deployment and hardening
• SMTP relay and mail routing configuration
• Hirschmann switch administration
• Exposure to Operational Technology (OT) environments
• Claroty xDome and CTD experience
• Geo SCADA configuration and administration
