Scala Developer (Scala, Java, SQL & Big Data)

mthree is hiring a Scala Developer to work with a tier-one global investment bank in London. You’ll join the EMEA Reference Data team within Global Markets Technology, which builds the technology that supports the reference data needs of the bank’s Global Markets business.

The team’s platforms are used across the bank globally, and the work includes some of its key regulatory programmes. The stack is built on Scala, with RDF, SPARQL and Big Data technologies such as Apache Hadoop, and all development follows Agile. Scala is preferred, but strong Java developers who want to learn Scala will also be considered.

The Role

This is a development-focused role. You’ll analyse business and technical requirements, then design and build critical components of the reference data technology stack, owning your work through every phase of the software development lifecycle. The team wants a self-starter who works well with others and enjoys picking up new technologies.

Responsibilities

1. Design and develop critical components of the reference data platform in Scala
2. Analyse business and technical requirements and turn them into technical solutions
3. Deliver across the full software development lifecycle, from design through to release
4. Work with RDF, SPARQL and Big Data technologies such as Apache Hadoop
5. Contribute to key regulatory programmes within the bank
6. Take ownership of high-level tasks and resolve the detail
7. Support the operational side of running a software stack

Required Experience

1. Strong Scala or Java development skills, with Java candidates willing to learn Scala
2. Strong SQL skills, with practical experience of at least one RDBMS
3. Strong understanding of software build and release management, using at least one build tool such as ANT
4. Good understanding of unit testing
5. Familiarity with development patterns
6. Familiarity with Big Data technologies such as Apache Hadoop
7. An understanding of the operational aspects of managing a software stack
8. A proactive approach and good communication skills

Desirable Experience

1. Familiarity with RDF and SPARQL
2. Knowledge of the client or product reference data domain
3. Exposure to functional programming, for candidates without Scala experience

About mthree

This role is through mthree’s Expert programme. You’ll be employed directly by mthree and deployed full time with one client, working as part of their team on their projects. Throughout the assignment you’ll have ongoing support from mthree, and where applicable there is a clear route to permanent employment with the client.
